Duties of the Town Clerk

Registrar of Vital Statistics: Keeper of all birth, death, and marriage records within the Town of Wawayanda. Issues birth, death, marriage certificates, and burial permits, as well as conducts genealogical searches.

Filing Officer for the Town: All local laws, oaths of office, affidavits of publication, resignations, petitions, annual budgets, fiscal reports, assessment rolls, bonds, and other pertinent town documents are filed in the Town Clerk's Office.

Permit Issuing Agent: Issues licenses and permits for marriages, dogs, conservation (hunting and fishing), bingo, games-of-chance licenses, handicapped parking, yard sale, fireworks, peddling, and soliciting.

Recording Secretary to the Town Board: The Town Clerk attends all Town Board meetings excluding Attorney/Client discussion and authors the minutes, which are retained permanently for legal and historic purposes. The official Sign Board for the Town is maintained by the Town Clerk's Office and all identified meeting dates and affidavits of publication are posted on the Board as prescribed by law.

Other Services: The Town Clerk's Office also sells E-ZPass, Zoning Maps, Zoning Books, Subdivision Books, and Town Maps.

E-ZPass: The Wawayanda Town Clerk’s office has announced E-ZPass is now available for sale for area residents. E-ZPass provides a savings of five percent on all Thruway tolls and is accepted in 15 states.

The E-ZPass tags are available for purchase at the Town Hall for $25.00. The tags have a $25 value and are active upon purchase, with $15 immediately available for toll usage, and the remaining $10 put to the balance once the tag is registered.

Duties of the Office of Tax Collector

The Tax Collector collects the General Property Taxes in January. The bills are mailed out the last week in December of the previous year. The tax bill covers the period of January 1st. – December 31st. Payments can be made upon receipt of bill through January 31st, without penalty. If they are paid on/after February 1st, there is a penalty, see below:

After March 31st, all unpaid parcels are turned over to Orange County Commissioner of Finance for collection.  All questions regarding delinquent tax amounts and penalties should be addressed to the Commissioner of Finance at (845) 291-2480.

Pursuant to Real Property Tax Law 922, failure to receive a property tax bill does not relieve the taxpayer of their obligation to pay taxes in full and in a timely manner. If the property taxes are not paid during the interest free period, the taxpayer is obligated to pay interest and penalties for late payments as per New York State Real Property Tax Law 924.

In addition to online payments with credit card, payments can also be made in person by check or cash during the hours listed above. Payments can also be made by mail. All payments have to be made for the correct amount due. Cash payments made in the office have to be made with the correct amount due. Please do not send cash through the mail.

The property tax bill contains levies for the Town, County, Fire District, and any special districts. In addition, if school or sewer bills are unpaid, they will be re-levied on the Property Tax Bill.

The Town of Wawayanda Tax Office does not collect School Taxes for the 3 School Districts within our town. Minisink Valley and Goshen School Tax Bills are mailed on September 1st, Middletown School tax bills are mailed on October 1st. The due date is specified on the bill. Please contact their tax offices with any questions you may have regarding School Taxes.
